Thumbs up for Tall Ships

Five STI officials spent two days in Hartlepool on a fact-finding mission and met up with the town's key Tall Ships players, including representatives from Hartlepool Council, PD Ports and Hartlepool Marina.

As well as visiting the Tall Ships site, officials received a series of updates in key aspects of the event including berthing issues, volunteer recruitment, health and safety, traffic and transport, event management, marketing and communications.

Paul Bishop, Race Director for The Tall Ships Races 2010, said: "Planning for the event is going very well and it is on track. There is a good Tall Ships team here in Hartlepool and clearly they have done their homework.

"Hartlepool gained its reputation as a sail training port when it hosted a number of ships en route to Newcastle in 2005 and this was a factor in the town winning the bid to be a host port in 2010. There is great community involvement with the event which is fantastic."

Mr Bishop went on to say that the number of Tall Ships to sign up so far is impressive.

"Fifty five ships so far is a good figure. I'm confident that more will sign up before the May 1 deadline, but nevertheless the current number will be a fantastic fleet."

Eighteen of the ships are Class A vessels - the larger square-rigged type ships - including the magnificent 300 ft Mir from Russia and Oman's Royal Navy vessel Shabab Oman. Immediately after the Tall Ships Races 2010 on Wednesday 11 August, Hartlepool will host the start of the North Sea Regatta.

Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond commented: "Everyone is pulling out all of the stops to make the event a huge success and to make sure it lives in people's memory for a long time. The positive feedback from STI is very encouraging but we still have lots to do in the run-up to the event."

Hartlepool is expected to welcome up to one million visitors for the finale which has been labelled as England's biggest free event this year. The ships are expected to arrive in Hartlepool on Saturday 7 August after sailing from Kristiansand in Norway in the second and final race. They will stay until Tuesday 10 August when they will bid a grand farewell in an impressive Parade of Sail.
